How much does it cost to get a Divorce?

Family lawyers generally charge on an hourly basis for the work they carry out, therefore the cost of any legal work will depend on the complexity and extent of the work to be carried out.

We will always give you an estimate of the cost during your initial interview with us

As an example, a divorce could involve one or more of the following aspects which need to be dealt with as part of the legal process:

  • The divorce itself – legally ending the marriage. (This may be the only element you require).
  • Finances – dealing with the splitting up of and assets such as property and also working out whether one spouse should pay maintenance.
  • Children – agreeing who the children will live with and what regular contact they will have with the other parent.
The amount of work required will vary with each case and will often depend on how much you and your ex-partner agree, or disagree on each aspect. Negotiations can be quick or drawn out, depending on the attitude and willingness of both parties to reach an agreement.

We will help you to reach a favourable agreement whilst maintaining control of the costs. Please contact us for a consultation and we will be able to assess your case and give you an estimate of the costs involved.

Who pays the legal fees for a divorce settlement?

In the majority of cases, both parties will have their own solicitor and will be responsible for their own legal fees.

In some circumstances it can be possible to include the payment of legal fees as part of the financial settlement if this is included in the negotiations.
