Divorce and Family law legal costs
We provide legal advice and representation both to privately paying clients as well as those claiming legal aid.
Legal aid is now only available for some types of legal work such as obtaining protection from domestic abuse, and for other types of family work in very limited circumstances. Contact us for more information on whether legal aid is available for you.
Where legal aid is not available and you are paying privately, we will give you an estimate of the cost during your initial interview with us.
Legal Aid for Family Law
Since April 2013, Legal Aid is only available in the following areas of Family Law.
- Public family law - regarding protection of children (care proceedings)
- Private family law - with evidence of child abuse
- Child abduction
- Representation of children in private family cases
- Legal advice in support of mediation
- Domestic violence injunction cases
- Forced marriage protection orders

How much does it cost to get a Divorce?
Family lawyers generally charge on an hourly basis for the work they carry out, therefore the cost of any legal work will depend on the complexity and extent of the work to be carried out.
We will always give you an estimate of the cost during your initial interview with us
As an example, a divorce could involve one or more of the following aspects which need to be dealt with as part of the legal process:
- The divorce itself – legally ending the marriage. (This may be the only element you require).
- Finances – dealing with the splitting up of and assets such as property and also working out whether one spouse should pay maintenance.
- Children – agreeing who the children will live with and what regular contact they will have with the other parent.

Who pays the legal fees for a divorce settlement?
In the majority of cases, both parties will have their own solicitor and will be responsible for their own legal fees.
In some circumstances it can be possible to include the payment of legal fees as part of the financial settlement if this is included in the negotiations.
